REAL HUMANS RENDERED.

We 3D scanned our entire team using LiDAR, rebuilt them in Unreal Engine, animated their motion, and put them on our website. People came back just to see it.

What We Built

Six months.
Every person. Every pixel.

01
LiDAR 3D Body Scanning
Every team member was scanned using LiDAR technology to capture precise body geometry, proportions and features. The scans formed the base mesh for each avatar.
02
Unreal Engine Rendering
Each scan was imported into Unreal Engine 5 where materials, lighting and skin shaders were applied. The result was photorealistic renders indistinguishable from photography.
03
Motion Capture and Animation
Each avatar was rigged and animated with motion capture data. Idle animations, walk cycles and pose transitions were all built for the web experience.
04
GIF and Web Export Pipeline
Rendered sequences were exported as optimised GIFs and web-ready assets. The pipeline was built from scratch to maintain quality at small file sizes.
05
Interactive Team Page
A scrollable, horizontally navigable team page. Click any avatar to expand a full-screen profile with their role, name and a personal intro.
06
Role and Identity System
Each avatar was tagged with their exact role: full stack, front end, studio, outreach, architect, merch, social media. The design made every person feel distinct and real.
How It Was Built

The stack
behind the render.

Unreal Engine 5
Primary rendering environment. Lumen global illumination, Nanite geometry and photorealistic skin shaders used throughout.
LiDAR Scanning
Mobile LiDAR capture for full-body geometry. Meshes cleaned and optimised in Blender before import into the Unreal pipeline.
Motion Capture
Inertial motion capture system used for body animation. Retargeted onto each unique avatar rig for natural, fluid movement.
Custom Web Pipeline
Rendered sequences processed into optimised GIFs and WebP sequences. Custom JS interaction layer built for the horizontal scroll and expand behaviour.
What Happened After
It became our
best acquisition channel.
We built this as an internal experiment. No brief. No client. Just a team that wanted to see if it could be done. When it went live on grustl.com, people came back specifically to show others. Founders reached out asking us to build the same for their teams. It turned a design agency website into a conversation starter.

People who came back to show it

BUILD THINGS PEOPLE REMEMBER.

This was never a service offering. It was proof that a team with ambition and the right tools can create something genuinely unforgettable.
